Point of Congruence

NOTES ONLEADERSHIP AND VALUES REORIENTATION

Turning Values into Habits

Point of Congruence is the sixth module in this proposed study corresponding to the sixth course listed in the CDA Standard Curricula. The title suggests that the challenge is more than just affirming values, it is turning these values into habits. As human resources management expert, Susan Heathfield rightly observed, "If you work in an organization, you’ve heard this complaint repeatedly. Leaders and managers say they want change and continuous improvement but their actions do not match their words...The power of an organization’s leaders in creating the organization’s values, environment, culture  and actions is immeasurable" (Susan Heathfield, How to Walk Your Talk:  Leadership and Sponsorship in Action, http://humanresources.about.com).

Other famous leaders share the same idea  -

Good leadership consists of showing average people how to do the work of superior people (John D. Rockefeller)... Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things (Peter Drucker)... Management is efficiency in climbing the ladder of success; leadership determines whether the ladder is leaning against the right wall (Stephen Covey)... Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other (John F. Kennedy)... The aim of education is the knowledge, not of facts, but of values (William S. Burroughs)... A people that values its privileges above its principles soon loses both (Dwight D. Eisenhower)... Classic economic theory, based as it is on an inadequate theory of human motivation, could be revolutionized by accepting the reality of higher human needs, including the impulse to self actualization and the love for the highest values (Abraham Maslow)... As a man, I've been representative of the values I hold dear. And the values I hold dear are carryovers from the lives of my parents. I had chosen to use my work as a reflection of my values (Sidney Poitier)... Absolute identity with one's cause is the first and great condition of successful leadership (Woodrow Wilson)...The single most critical success factor for Management By Values is congruence between what corporate leaders say they believe and what their actions and decisions communicate they believe (Simon Dolan, Salvador Garcia and Bonnie Richley)…

 Turning Values into Habits

The most important information for organizational leaders and managers of the 21st century may well be to learn how to put values into practice - (Simon Dolan, et al., ibid.)... Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes (Peter Drucker)... Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality (Warren G. Bennis)... â€‹
